Another year is over and done with but we’ve got to look back at 2020 one more time to talk about our favorite anime from the last year. If you’ve been following Anime Corps for the past while then you’ll know the format have have here for this series. Alright then as this will be a long post I’ll keep this intro short so we can get right to it.
One of my top picks for this season is, you guessed it, a cute girls doing cute things show. This time astronomy is the theme of this heartwarming show as we followed two girls with a passion for space on their journey to find and name an asteroid together. As always Girls Club shows like this are so relaxing and enjoyable to watch and they just leave you feeling nice and happy. While the story is usually a bit on the light side, it’s the characters who really bring things to life and I really liked the characters in this show. Of course the main two girls, Ao and Mira, are super cute and watching them together just brings a smile to your face. They’re such a cute couple and they journey throughout the show is one I greatly enjoyed watching. A character who really stood out for me though has got to be Suzu. She made her presence known right off the bat and she just got better and better as the show progressed. While I liked her more with the long hair she had at the start of the show, her short haired look was also very cute. Suzu also has a very nice side story throughout the show and I won’t spoil any of it as it’s very good. Another aspect about the show I liked was how it had some educational moments to it. I know nothing about astronomy and the likes but they did explain some stuff along the way and by the end it definitely gets you interested in learning more should you take a liking to it. All in all Koisuru Asteroid hit all the right notes and them some and it was a stand out show for the Winter season for me.
No this isn’t a joke or anything, I’m being 100% serious about this second pick for the Year In Review. I know where were a few other shows that aired in the Winter season that I greatly enjoyed but I can’t write about all of this and this show needs to mentioned here. While I initially didn’t pick this show up, once I got wind that FUNi dropped it because it was too sexual and anime Twitter went nuts about it, I had to see what it was all about. True it’s a very sexually explicit show, borderline hentai honestly, but that’s not why I enjoyed it so much, strange as it is to say that. It’s actually a genuinely funny show and I found myself laughing through so many eps. Of course it really depends on your sort of humor and once again normally this wouldn’t be something I’d gravitate towards, but I just had so much fun watching this show and the adventures of Crim, Stunk, and Zel as they traveled the lands reviewing brothels. I mentioned it in OG-Man’s review, but even after all the anime I’ve seen over the years, Ishuzoku Reviewers still managed to find a way to surprise me with it’s content each week and like I mentioned already, it just made for a surprisingly enjoyable anime. I do hope we get another season of this, I know FUNi won’t be streaming it, those snowflakes, but I’d totally be down for more of this wild sex comedy.
It has been a long time since I posted here, honestly, I think it was the anniversary post, maybe, or even last years “Year in Review” posts. Either way, 2020 was a weird year for anime. Winter was the last season where anything really aired before getting postponed to either fall or this current winter season. And while this season of anime I took a break and ended up watching about 300 episodes of One Piece. Although that pales in comparison to the Spring season where I watch the entirety of Naruto and Naruto Shippudin. Aside from that, there is one show that certainly stood out, that I did watch quiet a bit, and ultimately did not finish, that show is, In/Spectre.
I rather enjoyed it, it reminded me of Monogatari, more talk and action, yet still was rather entertaining. The reason for me stopping was I wanted more episodes to be out so I could just watch each arc, only to forget to continue. It really seems like that is a trend I have for dropping shows. Still the show is one I still would love to come back to and was still rather enjoyable. Other than that, not much more to say on the series.
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu
As I look back on early 2020 with some what of a smile now 12 months later, I have to say I miss this anime. Have you ever found a bug or a glitch in your favorite online game and spammed that crap until the cows came home? I have and you would share a lot in common with the protagonist of BoFuri Maple. The anime is not your usual trapped in a game anime instead it’s more of a slice of life about their life learning how to play the game but instead of making a reasonable build, Maple puts all of her points in defense. Not the smartest move? Well Maple manages almost like clockwork every episode to find some type of glitch, bug, or unintended use to make her even more OP each and every day. By the end of the anime, the devs are pretty much allowing her to do as she pleases because she’s not only an Ace player within the game she’s also gotten a lot of people to start playing because of her antics so she’s good for the game. All in all, the anime is not about battles to the death. Instead it’s about Maple sharing the experiences of the game with her friends as they level up and discover more and more about the game. I could tell you how many times I laughed at all of Maple’s hilarious antics born of her not being a gamer and the sheer amount of stuff she can get into by not thinking like one. And it’s just been confirmed to get a second season in the Winter of 2022. So I personally recommend it.
So that wraps it up for the first part of the Year In Review. What were some of your favorite anime that aired in the Winter 2020 season? Leave a comment below with your picks!
Up next is the Spring 2020 season post which will be out next Saturday!
