The long-awaited final battle part 2.
Here’s my review.
It shouldn’t really come as any surprise who was going to win this fight. I mean unless they wanted to turn things completely upside down and probably just mess up the whole story in the process, it was pretty carved in stone that Ayato and Julis would be coming out champions from this battle. I was kinda hoping to have another all out battle from start to finish, but I guess having the post battle wrap up worked too as we get to check in with everyone and see how they’re doing. But before we get to the end, let’s take a look at how the battle went.
We ended the last week with Ayato finally being able to use his Ser-Vesta once again as Kirin and Saya had rescued Flora and everything was good once again. The comeback could finally happen, and boy did it happen. But instead of Ayato just going completely ham and trying to single-handedly win, he relied on teamwork to bring them to victory as AR-D was proving far too powerful for them to fight individually against. In a way this battle is very similar to the season 1 finale where Ayato and Julis fought Irene and Priscilla as their opponent AR-D was outputting a lot of power and had he not been able to keep it in check with the help of his Ulm Manadite engine. This engine is also making it possible for AR-D to trade blows with the all-powerful Ser-Vesta, something not many weapons are able to do. So pretty much if they want to beat him, they’ll need to get something even more powerful that the Ser-Vesta to do it.
Thankfully Julis knows just the solution to this problem and combining her power with the Ser-Vesta’s, Ayato is able to tailor the weapon to best suit his capability, making it the perfect fit for him. Usually the Ser-Vesta is a big purple sword but after some quick customizing it’s much shorter and now an orange-y red black sort of blade with flames spiraling up it. Just look at the picture.
Anyways this combined power is just enough for Ayato to finish off AR-D as a wounded Julis sits and watches her partner do what he does best. It’s a tough final push but after pouring all his power into it, Ayato finally cuts the badge of AR-D, winning the battle and Phoenix Festa too.
The back half has a lot going on as we’re jumping around from Ayato receiving the trophy to Yabuki fighting the presumed dead ninja guy from last week (I think he’s dead for real now), to Camilla and RM-C asking Saya for a rematch to Ernesta talking with Dirk about a potential team up. The main group also take the time to stop in and see Kirin who’s in hospital after getting injured in last week’s rescue operation. All in all this whole back half felt like a final ep, checking in on everyone and such, but it’s not over yet. Arlequint and ReWolf are looking like they might team up to build some super powered bot and of course the main point regarding Haruka still isn’t solved yet, so we’ve got some loose ends that need tying up and only 3 eps to do it in. One point I did like was seeing Ayato and Julis finally getting a lot closer to each other. We’ve seen shades of it here and there, but for once it really feels like they’re on the same page. They were always the main couple of this show but now they actually look the part.
The most interesting part comes via post credit scene where we see Ayato and Julis talking with Phoenix Festa coordinator Madiath Mesa. Mesa explains that ReWolf isn’t the group who kidnapped Flora rather it was a mafia group instead, but of course we all know this can’t be true. Julis isn’t pleased with the news but Mesa insists he’s doing what he can. The other topic is about Haruka, and how he hopes Ayato can find her at some point. We end with the reveal that Mesa and Dirk from ReWolf are actually working together and that Mesa has Haruka held in some chamber in a lab somewhere.
From the looks of it I’m going out on a limb saying that this bot Arlequint wants to build will be somehow power by Haruka. As for how that’ll all take shape I’m not sure but looking at how things are that seems like a possibility. Also as Dirk mentioned to Ernesta that she currently had no power source for her third bot, Haruka might be the one to provide that source. I don’t know, it’s just something I thought up based on this ep; I’m still just as intrigued to see how this will all play out. As for one last point, it looks like they’ve covered the first 5 light novels so far and with 3 eps left and another 5 light novels remaining, is it possible we’ll see another season to this show? I can’t see them wrapping everything up in 3 eps unless they just time skip to further along in the story, which wouldn’t be too surprising. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next.
So that’s all for this week, solid ep and nice closure to the whole Phoenix Festa arc. With 3 eps remaining it feels like we’ve got a lot of story still left to tell so unless they spam through it all, a third season could be in the future.
That’s what I thought of this week’s ep, please let me know your thoughts on it in the comments below! Oh and if you’re up to date with the light novels, please refrain from posting spoilers in the comments.
