Saya and Kirin deepen their bonds by shopping for guns and going swimming.
Here’s my review!
Hello again and welcome back to another Asterisk review! I’m still in the process of catching up, but I hope to be back on schedule by the time ep 11 comes out. That’s also taking into account that my laptop doesn’t die between now and then. But that aside, let’s talk about this ep as it proved to be something I liked, and not just because it featured anime girls in swimsuits.
For starters this was the first ep that didn’t feature Ayato, Julis, or Claudia in it, rather it put the spotlight on Saya and Kirin. This was nice to see for a change, especially for Saya who hasn’t gotten much screen time since first being introduced. So as to what these girls were up to in this ep, they’re training for the upcoming Phoenix Festa event but so far their training isn’t going too well. They’re out of sync and making costly mistakes, ones that if they don’t fix could destroy their chances of winning. It’s strange though as Kirin used to be the top ranked student in the school, and Saya is a weapons expert, so you’d think they’d be a killer team, but sadly that’s not the case at all.
After talking things over later on, Saya comes to the conclusion that it must because their bond isn’t deep enough and they don’t really know each other that well. So what better way to get better acquainted than go gun shopping? That’s exactly what they do the following day, taking a day off their training to hit the town for some fun. A quick trip to the ghetto looking half of town, Saya and Kirin end up at a sketchy looking gun shop where Saya picks up a gun. They follow this with something Kirin wants to do, which is go to the pool and get some swimming lessons from Saya.
Now I’m not sure I mentioned this in the last review, but that underground place Ayato and Kirin were trapped in, it was filled with water and it just so happens that Kirin can’t swim. It was nice to see Kirin asking Saya for swimming lessons instead of the usual asking the MC for lessons and some usual harem antics happening during that process.
During this sequence though Kirin accidentally bumps into (most like crashes at full speed into) another girl at the pool. This girl just so happens to be the 35th ranked student at Queenvale Academy, Miss. Violet Weinberg. For you trivia fans, Violet is voiced by the amazingly talented Yukari Tamura. Violet has quite the attitude and doesn’t take kindly to being crashed into, so instantly she challenges Kirin to a duel, but ends up eating her words once she realizes she’s talking to the number 1 ranked student at Seidoukan Academy, well former number 1 ranked student. Either way Violet suddenly isn’t up for a fight, but Saya steps in and aggravates her a bit more and now it’s time to fight for real.
After all her huge talk, Violet ends up getting her ass handed to her as Saya whips out a huge cannon and blasts her across the pool deck. Rekt. With the day’s excitement now winding down, Saya and Kirin have a moment where they sit down at talk for a bit, Saya finally explaining why she wanted Kirin as her partner going into the Phoenix Festa. Their mission to strengthen their bonds proved successful as they’ve drawn closer as friends along with sharing similar goals too. They’re a strong team now, one that Ayato and Julis better watch out for in the coming event.
We end the ep with Saya and Kirin back in the training room, this time beating Ayato and Julis’ high score and really showing off their skills. Even Julis is quite impressed with what they were able to accomplish in just a day. The second thing in back in Claudia’s office where she and Yabuki are reviewing the brackets for the event, seeing that they’ve got a lot of work to do if they want to come out on top. The next ep should be a good one, I look forward to watching it!
Moving along with my catch up reviews, I’m still liking Asterisk as a whole. It’s not perfect, I doubt any magic high school anime could be, but on the same hand it’s not terrible either. I’m interested to see how this Phoenix Festa goes, I’m guessing from ep 9 onwards it’ll be dealing with that, but I’ll see when I get there.
