Sorry for this being delayed for pretty much 3 weeks.
After reading the synopsis about this one, I wasn’t too impressed. It sounded pretty much like another Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu, one which I already didn’t like. But giving it a chance, boy was I in for a surprise. Aside from Nozaki-kun, Sabagebu was the only other anime that had me laughing so much as I watched it. Yeah sure I enjoyed it for the gun porn, but honestly it was straight up hilarious! I loved Momoka so much, she was such an awesome MC. The way she’d just brutally shoot down others without batting an eyelash, oh man the first time that happened it was too funny. We need more female MC’s like her in anime, just perfect! Story wise there isn’t much here, it’s a pretty standard slice of life, cute girls with guns anime, but what I really liked about it was that it never tried to take itself seriously. They had crazy jokes, random shit happening, and just gags a plenty. Chuck Norris showed up, Predator, Alien; there were helicopters, lolis with assault rifles, it was just all silly, crazy, over the top, but it worked and it proved to be totally and completely hilarious. I’m really glad I decided to give this one a chance and not write it off as another C³-bu like I feared it to be. Looking back at this one, I’m giving Sabagebu! a solid 8/10. Really funny stuff here.
Sword Art Online II
The biggest, most popular anime of 2012 has returned with a second season. Yes Sword Art Online captured the anime world’s attention through its dominating run a few years ago, so needless to say when it was announced that a season 2 was on it’s way, people rejoiced. So I’ve seen SAO season 1, I enjoyed it and yes I did give it a 10/10 as well (hate me if you want) and while true it’s not perfect, I was captivated by it when it first aired and to me it was pretty good. While I passed up reviewing season 2, I’ve been following it closely (well trying to, I’m usually late watching the current ep) and so far I’m enjoying it quite a bit. Pretty much the same cast is back, the lovely Asuna and Sugu, our impossible hero Kirito and we’ve got some new faces too like one of the best girls of the summer Sinon. After 13 eps I’m really into this one so far, maybe it’s just because it’s all about guns (love that gun porn) but from an entertainment standpoint it’s really great to watch. I’m looking forward to what the back half of it’s 24 ep run holds in store as we move through the fall season and to the end of the year. So far Sword Art Online 2 holds an 8/10 score. I’ll return with my final thoughts when this one wraps up in December.
I thought this one would be good, well not like amazing, but just good. Nope, this was not. I got a similar vibe I got with Samurai Flamenco, which by the way might be among the worst things my eyes have seen, so if that’s any indication of what Tokyo ESP is, then that should’ve been a sign to stop. For some masochistic reason I can’t seem to figure out why I kept watching this one right till the bitter end, and surprise, surprise, it was utter shit. The characters were meh, the plot was a mess, things just happened that didn’t make sense, and I had a hard time reasoning with everyone’s motivation as to what they thought was right. Also I noticed a common theme running through out this anime, which is character’s faces getting repeatedly smashed up a lot and then being covered in bandages. Was this some animators fucked up fetish or something, because it happened a lot! Anyways it’s over now and I never have to think of it again. Tokyo ESP gets a lowly 3/10. Just don’t watch it.
From start to finish Tokyo Ghoul was a pretty standard anime by my books. Nothing earth shatteringly amazing about it nor was it bland and not enjoyable, pretty much just right down the middle. Like usual, I look at the final ep a lot when writing down my final thoughts because I like it when a series comes to a fitting end; Tokyo Ghoul felt like it was only just beginning and now that Kaneki had accepted Rize and became a ghoul for real, the story could actually start. Now I have not read the manga so I can’t make a comparison, but from what I’ve seen from others on Twitter, the manga is the better way to go.
Whether or not this on gets a season 2 I’m not sure, but from a story telling stand point, it’s a very open ending. Too open for my liking. EDIT: Season 2 has been green lit for January.
There is only conclusion on the Kaneki front, nothing from all the others, which really does annoy me as I really do want to know how everyone else panned out in that battle. I’d love to see Amon and Touka have one final showdown where they settle that one once and for all. Also the introduction of new characters at the end wasn’t touched on at all. Things like that are what bring this down more than the over the top censoring. I mean all in all it’s not a bad anime, but I wasn’t impressed with the execution of the plot for the final ep. It’s too open and really just leaves everything up to the viewer (like me who hasn’t read the manga) to piece together how it might have ended. Nope, I don’t like that. Unless the whole anime is one to play with your mind and be full of twists and turns, which this was not, then having an ending where you pretty much figure everything out for yourself isn’t a good choice. I can’t say I liked it that much, but once again I didn’t hate it. I’m giving Tokyo Ghoul a 6/10.
Yama no Susume Season 2
I think it was 2012 when season 1 of this started, but whatever the case, I’m just glad it’s back for another season. This time we’re got longer eps and bigger mountains to climb. What I like the most about this one though is that it’s just so chill to watch; I love the atmosphere it has and watching it is pretty refreshing. This time around, I really love the OP, something that season 1 didn’t have actually. The ED is good too, but the season 1 ED is really chill, probably even more so too. As this one will continue on till the end of the year, my thoughts right now are only based on the first 13 eps, but I’ve enjoyed them all a lot and I’m looking forward to the rest of the eps as the weeks continue to roll by. So far I’m giving Yama no Susume Season 2 a 7.5/10.
Zankyou no Terror
After finishing this one, I was left breathless. Wow what a thrilling ride Zankyou no Terror was. From start to finish it was pulse pounding, nail biting, suspenseful and had one hell of a story. This is probably one of the very few anime that I’ve seen that deal with terrorists and for the majority, you’re following and cheering for them. As the eps move on, the plot slowly unravels and you begin to learn the truth about where Nine and Twelve come from and the terrible secrets people are trying to keep hidden. First of all I love the atmosphere this anime creates from ep 1 and it really captivates you right off the bat. The characters are solid throughout, although Lisa felt like a third wheel through most of the anime, just kinda taking up space at times and not really adding too much to the plot, but she was still helpful in small doses. The OST for Zankyou is really good too, it carries the atmosphere well and you get a chill down your spine as you listen to it. I also really loved the OP for this one, Yuuki Ozaki doing a really great job with it. All in all this is totally one to put time into as it blew me away and each week kept me on the edge of my seat. What an ending this one has too; I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it, but man it all came to a thrilling climax. Zankyou no Terror gets a solid 9/10 from me. Really good stuff here.
