After last week’s rather poor episode, could Rail Wars turn things around and come back with something good?
Here’s my review!
I like how this ep starts actually, it’s pretty good. We meet Mari Sasshou, a classmate of Takayama, out recording the sound of a passing train. I thought this was pretty cool as I’ve seen pics of Mari before, and to me she’s always just been “that girl recording the sounds of trains” and not much more, so it’s pretty cool to actually see her in the anime now.
So really then this ep is about Mari and introducing her to the viewers. Right off the bat we gain some info about her: she’s got very good hearing, as she’s able to recognize Takayama’s foot steps (how that’s actually possible I have no idea) and we learn that she’s also starting the OJT program at Japan Foods Inc. Now as FFF loves using acronyms I’ve forgotten what OJT stands for, but whatever it means, Mari is starting this program too.
I also liked how Mari and Takayama have this game they play when two trains are both at the station and leave at the same time; they both try to guess which train will make it to the next station first. Kind of a fun little game to pass the time I guess. I love the Engrish in this ep too, so damn funny! Takayama is forced to deal with the guy, I’m guessing American, but it’s hilarious how fast everyone suddenly clears the area once the guy starts asking for help. Haha priceless!
Thankfully for Koumi was able to get them out of that tight spot as she knew enough English to help the stranded traveler out. So as much as a boobs character as Koumi is, she can be helpful at times, meaning she’s not totally useless. Sure she’s still a klutzy girl with boobs that have a mind of their own, but when it comes to details, Koumi is pretty good with that stuff. Plus without her on the team I’m not sure where they’d get. Think about it, Sakurai is so goddamn trigger happy she’s probably kill everyone who looked at her the wrong way, Iwaizumi is all brawn no brains, typical brute, and Takayama while he’s probably the most capable person out of the four, he’s still got problems too.
We run into Mari later on in the ep too, as we find out she’s working at the Cherry Blossom, a nice restaurant, as a waitress. We have some more background info on Takayama and Mari and how they were in the same class back in the day. After some random Koumi boob stuff the following day, the rest of the ep is about Mari asking the K4 to look for her missing friend, Kaori.
So this brings me to the huge error in this ep. Before watching the ep it was hinted at that there was a really big error that I couldn’t miss, and sure enough I didn’t miss it.
After sifting through mountains of folders trying to look for clues to Kaori’s whereabouts, they finally get a lead. Let’s take a look at this scene and really break down just how bad it is.
Now while watching this part maybe we didn’t catch it right away, but all logic has left the building during this scene. When asked if there were any more recordings left by Kaori before she went dark, Koumi says there aren’t anymore in the folder. Uh… okay so what are those other audio files then? Did they somehow rule out looking through all the others because they already knew they wouldn’t have anything on them that would be of any help? Seriously, it’s stuff like this that really pisses me off with this anime; these are errors that don’t need to be here yet they’re spilling past the editor or whoever watches them to make sure they’re all good before airing it.
At this point we can’t use the “it’s the studio’s second anime” excuse anymore. This is just poor production on all fronts now. We get the ear protection in ep 1, the multitude of errors in ep 2, and now this too? Geez what could possibly happen next? No, no, I don’t want to think about that because something terrible might just happen.
So the ep ends with K4 locating Kaori in some abandoned building as she was abducted by some drug dealers after accidentally stumbling upon on of their deals, so they took her so she wouldn’t report them to the police. I kinda wish we could’ve seen the fight that happened, as it would’ve been pretty badass, especially knowing how Sakurai fights, but oh well.
All in all ep 3 wasn’t bad per se, but it just didn’t really excite me that much. I left feeling underwhelmed as I did with the first two eps. Maybe ep 4 will turn things around as it looks like the beach/swimsuit ep, so we’ll get to see the awesome Sakurai in a swimsuit! Yes, I can’t wait!! Honestly I’m still waiting to be amazed by this anime, but at the rate it’s going, and the constant animation errors, I’m not sure this one can be helped anymore. It’d take something major to get this going in the right direction, so maybe that’ll happen, but don’t get your hopes set on that.
Let’s take a look at some screen shots from the ep now.
So there you have it, the Rail Wars ep 3 review. I really want this anime to start going places soon, but it’s just not working out so far. I’ll keep watching it as I really do like Sakurai but if push comes to shove and I end up having to make a choice, I will drop it.
Up next I’ll have my ep 3 review for Hanayamata, so look forward to that and I’ll cya in the next post!
