One of the cutest anime this season continues with more cute girls doing cute things. Yeah I have a feeling I’ll be using the word ‘cute’ a lot for this anime. Let’s begin.

Here’s my review!

So after the opener last week, Hana and Naru have become good friends, something that’s not really sitting well with Naru’s long time friend Yaya. Sitting in class, Hana and Naru are chatting away, a conversation impossible for Yaya not to overhear, and Hana suggests they have a strategy meeting to discuss how to get more members. Here’s the catch though, that meeting will be at Naru’s house! Both Naru and Yaya react to this, and each for their own reasons. Naru because she’s never had people over to her place really, and Yaya because Hana gets to go over to Naru’s house.

Following the lovely OP, we’re back with Yaya as she’s taking out her frustration on the drum set in the music room. The other girls stand and watch, the Mio like one asking her if anything is wrong. Yaya of course answers no as a tsundere never reveals their feelings that easily. Back at Naru’s house, Naru is frantically preparing for Hana’s visit. She’s cleaned her room, put on some nice clothes, made sure her hair is looking good, cleared the Internet history on her laptop and has her room looking perfect. I’ve gotta say, I do envy the bedrooms characters in anime have, they always are so amazing! I wish I could have my own room like that, as having your own room is such a nice feeling.

Anyways back to this review; Naru is very nervous about having Hana over as it’s the first time in years that she’s had anyone over that’s not Yaya. Another reason to why Yaya is so upset is because of this; we know that both Naru and Yaya are good close friends, so naturally when Hana shows up and ruins this nice friendship, Yaya is clearly annoyed and frustrated about this all. Couple that with the fact Hana gets to go over to Naru’s house, well that’s just too much for Yaya.

So Hana finally arrives and upon seeing Naru’s father (who is dressed like a samurai, according to Hana), she quickly loses all her self control and starts taking pictures like crazy. Haha, I guess she’s never seen someone dressed like that so she’s mistakes him for a samurai. We cut quickly over to Yaya, who is working at her family owned restaurant, as she ponders over whether or not Hana is actually over at Naru’s house. It’s pretty obvious by now that she’s quite jealous about this whole matter.

Back with the other two girls, Hana has already started the meeting, asking Naru how they can attract more members to join them in doing the yosakoi. I love how Hana gets right up in her face to ask her this, haha Naru didn’t totally freak out when Hana did this. So in answer to Hana’s question about how to attract more people to yosakoi, Naru suggests they should start off by showing people what exactly yosakoi is. Remembering back to last week, when Naru first watched a video of it, she was blown away and instantly ruled out actually doing something like that. Her idea of making yosakoi more approachable to other, and not be so forceful, is a pretty good idea.

The conversation switches to books and hobbies after Hana notices the extensive book collection Naru has. Another side point here: once again I love how characters in anime have book shelves like this, I so want one! Anyways back to this scene; we learn once again that Naru like fantasy novels along with romance novels too, nothing wrong with that as those are both good genres to read. We also learn that Hana enjoys to read superhero comics (obviously she’s referring to Batman comics), something Naru thinks is rather boy-ish for such a cute girl. Not taking that the wrong way, Hana continues on, saying she gets that comment a lot. Hana also mentions that she wanted to be a ninja (further proof that she reads Batman comics) and actually did freerunning too.

Now freerunning is different from parkour, if you didn’t know. Freerunning is more a showy type of thing to do, as it’s American (just sayin’…) while parkour is actually something that was created in France and it’s for those wanting the real thing. The main point of parkour is not to show off tricks and shit, but to get from point A to point B in the most direct route. A big factor as to why isn’t not a big thing over here is because the overall architecture of European buildings allows for traceurs to practice in a real life urban environment compared to just showing off. So if anyone asks you, be sure to tell them that parkour is the best and don’t get caught up with that American freerunning.

Sorry, I’m getting side tracked here. After explaining what freerunning is to Naru (not as detailed as I did) Naru wonders how she got from doing that to the yosakoi. Good question too. Hana answers saying that she wanted to do something with other people, and after seeing the yosakoi preformed in person when she a little girl, it amazed her. Hana felt lonely and the unity in the yosakoi was something that Hana longed for. She mentions that as cool as superheroes are, they have to battle the never ending war of loneliness (capping my argument that she reads Batman comics) everyday, and that’s just not something Hana enjoys. After saying how much this means to her, how important wanting to have this connection with another person is, Naru finally begins to make sense of not only her feelings, but also those of Hana too.

Quickly changing the subject, Hana brings out her favorite yosakoi DVD (not Blu-Ray?) and they both watch it, becoming immersed in the elegance and passion of the dance. But the fun isn’t over yet; Hana brought a present for Naru, another one of those clapper things. We also learn that they do have a name (surprise, surprise!) and they’re called a ‘naruko’. Imagine that?!

The next day Naru brings the naruko to school where Yaya sees it, sparking a conversation. When she finds out it’s something Hana gave Naru, Yaya’s tsundere mode kicks in once again as by now we should all realize the feelings of Yaya. Before we reach the eyecatch, Hana and Naru make plans to visit a yosakoi shop after school, something Yaya sees them going off to later on as she’s on classroom cleaning duty.

Eye catch with stats on Yaya.

Following the eye catch we’re back with Hana and Naru as they’re arrived at the yosakoi shop, but some gangster looking dude is standing in front, blocking their way in. Feeling too intimidated to try to talk their way past him, Naru decides that they should leave and maybe come back another time. Both girls decide to stop in at a shop along the way and eat some anmitus (I have no idea what that is but apparently it tastes good, according to Hana); while Hana and Naru are enjoying themselves, Yaya has sent a text to Naru’s phone asking how things went at the yosakoi shop. Sadly though, Naru doesn’t hear her phone buzzing, thus missing the text for now. Naru finally notices the text later on that evening and replies to it, leaving Yaya even more depressed now.

The next day Yaya confronts both Hana and Naru on the stairs leading up to the school. Yaya wants to know if Naru is really going ahead with this yosakoi thing, to which she replies yes as she’s helping out Hana, but it’s evident that Naru is really enjoying herself a lot too. As the conversation goes on and on, things start to get heated and Yaya starts getting quite upset about the matter. Naru though says that she’ll prove to Yaya that Hana didn’t push her into doing this by showing her the qualities of yosakoi that attracted her. She sets a one week time frame and says that in a week she’ll be able to do the yosakoi and show Yaya that it’s not bad.

A few days pass and Naru practices hard, still not able to full master the dance, but she’s still giving it her all, determined to prove to Yaya that she’s fully capable of preforming the yosakoi. Hana has a meet up with Yaya to ask her if she’d come watch how hard Naru is practicing for her. Agreeing to it, Yaya watches Naru go through a awkward routine as she’s still trying to iron out the bad spots, but it’s got a long way to go.

In the stairwell, Yaya has a talk with herself about how she should be viewing Naru and her new found love for yosakoi. Coming to the conclusion that a true friend would be supporting her all the way, she returns to the rooftop and requests to see the yosakoi from Naru. Still quite awkward and clumsy, Naru dances anyways and Yaya suddenly realizes that maybe yosakoi isn’t all the bad after all. Of course Yaya says all this in a very tsundere way as she can’t really express her true feelings just yet.

We end the ep with Naru and Yaya finally making up (not out) as they’re reached a sort of agreement about the whole yosakoi deal. Obviously at some point, I’m guessing soon too, Yaya will be joining the other two in yosakoi (as she’s shown in the OP and it’s just clear she was going to join anyways) and I’m also looking forward to the other two girls finally being properly introduced as well.

So that brings this ep to a close. What did you think of it? How are you enjoying Hanayamata thus far? Favorite girl? Let me know what you think about this anime in the comments below!

So there you have it, ep 2 of Hanayamata. So far I’m really enjoying this anime a lot, it’s got cute girls doing cute things (always good), I really like the OP so expect to see that one in a good position for my top OPs for the summer anime, the music overall is good, I like the art, and the whole yosakoi element is nice too. I’m looking forward to when the whole gang is together and they start dancing for real.

If you’re watching Hanayamata, what are your thoughts after 2 eps? Like it? Hate it? Favorite character? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! Up next I’ll have the review for Glasslip ep 3, followed by the Rail Wars ep 3 review too. The reviews handled by Justin will be posted in their due time, so just wait for them okay.
