Nozomi takes the spotlight in a heartfelt episode about love, friendship and writing a new song.
Here’s my review!
Back in shape and ready to roll, Honoka and the girls are fired up and ready to face the other school idol groups as the final round is coming up quickly. In an interview with all 4 remaining groups, Honoka makes the bold statement that they’re going to win Love Live, something which Nico gives her an earful in a later group meeting. It’s so like Honoka, getting caught up in the moment, but if they’re going to aim to win Love Live, they’re going to have to put up a big fight against the likes of A-RISE and the other two groups as well.
Next up they discuss how they’re going to proceed with the next round, and it’s gotta be something that will really push them to the top. Nico suggests a new song, but Kotori points out that last time they forced themselves to come up with something good, things didn’t really go that well. Nozomi speaks up though with a bold suggestion that takes the group by surprise: why not write a love song?
Hanayo says that love songs are a key part of idol groups and makes it known that since they formed μ’s they haven’t written/sang a love song. All eyes turn to their lyric writer, Umi, and put the question to her now. Umi, having never been in a relationship before, feels that it’s impossible for her to write lyrics on something she doesn’t know much about. Trust Nozomi to come up with an idea with make things work though; her first suggestion is to film the girl pretending to give someone a gift. By far, Maki’s confession was the best. I love how Nico tries to one up her and go all out, but sadly she’s cut off as the camera runs too low on charge to continue filming. Haha, Nico is always having that happen to her.
In the end they don’t get much accomplished that day and leave the school with still no idea on how they want o proceed. Maki is pretty adamant about them not having enough time to write a new song and they shouldn’t be taking a risk by doing this. Umi shares similar thoughts as she things they need to perfect what they already have, along with most of the other girls too. Ericchi also isn’t backing down from Nozomi’s idea of the love song and wants to push forward with writing it. Maki takes note of this and the gears start to turn in her mind, why is Ericchi so gung ho about writing a love song?
Maki, Hanayo and Rin meet up later on for a drink and talk this over. The conversation quickly turns into a worst-possible-thing-that-could-happen conversation and Rin suggests that maybe Ericchi is actually working with A-RISE and trying to get μ’s to lose of purpose! Before the half way point eye catch, Ericchi and Nozomi are shown on their way home talking about things; even Nozomi things she’s being a bit too pushy on trying to get the group to write a love song. Ericchi makes an interesting point as she mentions that writing a love song is something Nozomi has always wanted to do. Hmm, just what is going on here?
Their group brainstorming session at Honoka’s house starts off not so well, as no one can think of ideas to write down, but then Kotori seemingly saves the day by suggesting they watch a romance movie to get some inspiration of what love is about. We jump cut to presumably near the end of the movie and we see most of the girls in tears as they sit watching the movie. Rin and Honoka are fast asleep, Maki is sitting with a bored expression on her face, Nice is actually crying as well, Nozomi is acting normal but Umi is sitting in the back hiding. Why? It’s too embarrassing for her to watch. I guess she can’t handle the kissing scene. Before the two characters on screen can lock lips, Umi turns off the TV and flicks the light on. Damn, right in the pivotal part of the movie too.
Maki has seen enough though, she’s thinking in terms of the time frame here. Writing a song, mastering it, getting a dance together, mastering that, and making costumes takes time, time which they don’t have. Although Ericchi really wants to continue with writing the love song, the others start to realize that Maki has a valid point and there might not be enough time to do everything they want to write a love song. Even Nozomi agrees with Maki, even though she suggested the love song in the first place. Calling it a day the girls depart from Honoka’s house but Maki decides to follow Ericchi and Nozomi to get some answers to her questions. What Maki gets thought is something much more.
Here is the heartfelt part of this episode, the back story to Nozomi. We learn that Nozomi had a dream for all nine girls to make something together, a song with ideas from everyone, that’s why she suggested a love song. What follows is the back story part of Nozomi; growing up she changed schools a lot so she had no friends, she usually just sat by herself and read (nothing wrong with that) but this bothered her a lot. Then one day she met Ericchi and knew that she was different from everyone else, just like her. The two became good friends form that day onwards. From there they observed the other girls who would form μ’s and watch as they slowly came together. After some time μ’s was finally formed and Nozomi had accomplished her dream of creating something with all nine girls.
From there they’re able to come together and finally start thinking up ideas for a love song, but as they’re doing song, it’s starts to snow outside and the girls go running out. Standing in a large circle, the lyrics start coming to them and the love song is finally coming together! This ending part leads me to believe that in the next ep they’re sing the song ‘Snow Halation’ as everything starts to lead up to that. If so then ep 9 might be my favorite ep of the season as I really, really love that song.
All in all ep 8 was another heartfelt ep that shed light on who Nozomi really is and why μ’s is so important to her. I’m still wondering how/why Nozomi knows everything though, I was kinda hoping that would be addressed, but I guess I can live with some mystery in her character.
Let’s take a look at some screen shots from this ep!
That brings this review to an ending! Thanks for reading! Just a last word before you leave, if you haven’t watched the Snow Halation music video, then I highly suggest you do. Here it is in 720p HD for your enjoyment!
