Another amazing ep of Love Live this weekend, I really hope you’ve watched it because this anime is an unstoppable powerhouse!
This week we’re taking time to feature Nico Yazawa as the spotlight is on her personal life out of school!
Here’s my review!
So that day has finally arrived for the winner’s of the preliminaries to be announced. Exciting times for the girls as it’s time to see if all their hard work has paid off. I was really getting into it as well, being very anxious to see if they had made it too, and when Hanayo scrolls down the page and you see they’re not on there, I was actually really disappointed. Then we realize it’s actually Honoka retelling her dream to the girls before they actually do check to see if they’ve made it past round 1. Haha I was not expecting that actually, but trust Honoka to open an ep with something like that.
Now for real this time Hanayo scrolls through the winners, all the girls crowded around to see if they’ve made it. A-RISE obviously takes the top spot as their performance was really amazing. Hell, I was cheering for them actually up until μ’s took the stage and wowed us with a stunning follow up performance. Plus A-RISE doesn’t have Maki, so in the end I’ll always vote for μ’s. So back to the build up here, I found it hilarious that things played out exactly like in Honoka’s dream; Umi was covering her ears wanting it to be over, Nozomi was checking her tarot cards and Nico was trying to keep cool but ends up squeezing her juice box and spilling the juice, exactly like in the dream. So the winners are posted: #1: A-RISE, #2: East Heart, #3: Midnight Cats, #4: μ’s. YES!! THEY MADE IT!!! I was so happy they made it past round 1 (although I expected them to) but actually seeing their group posted in the winning column, yeah it was nice. Also, as Umi was covering her ears the whole time, she missed all the reactions from the girls and only found out as they announced it on the PA. But even though it’s a joyous time we see a very somber Nico leaning against the wall. Hmm, I wonder why?
Back up on the rooftop the girls are ready to practice some more, Umi and Ericchi explain that they’ll be doubling the schedule to make sure they have everything perfect in the next round. The looming face off against A-RISE is still on the minds of everyone as it’s not going to be an easy task competing against them in the final round. Honoka is about to lead the group in a get pumped group cheer, but Kotori notices something’s wrong, they’re missing someone. After a quick headcount by Nozomi, they seem to have everyone. I love how Honoka was totally chill that someone was actually missing from the group, especially after she was the missing person last time. It finally dons on them that Nico is missing and they all go running to find her, just as she’s about to leave the school. I also found it hilarious that Nico tells them that she’s off to attend to something and says they should be practicing hard, something with Honoka agrees with really easily.
We see Nico at the store next and also see that they’ve follower her too. I love that part where they’re trying to figure out why she might be at the store, suggesting she might have a part time job there. The vision of Nico selling meat was so funny and Rin was actually buying that idea. Turns out Nico is just buying food. Oh, that’s pretty normal. But why would she skip practice to go buy food? Yeah okay I might be inclined to do that if I was hungry, but it’s Nico we’re talking about here, she’s passionate about idol groups and her dream is to compete in Love Live, so why would she suddenly start skipping practice to go buy food? They bounce a few more ideas around but in doing so give away their hiding spot and Nico sees them. Oh no. Slowly putting her shopping basket down, Nico starts running back into the store to escape. Going out the back entrance, Nico thinks she’s outsmarted them, but Ericchi and Nozomi are standing waiting.
One of the perks to being small is showcased here as Nico is able to escape Nozomi, not only once, but twice. First a very pro move slipping out of her breast groping move there and taking off running, then going through a tight spot between the parked vans. This has to be among my top favorite parts of the ep. I love that look on Nozomi’s face when she gets Rin to go after her instead. That smug smile on her face! Haha that killed me there! I’m not a big Nozomi fan, but that garners respect right there. That’s gotta be among the best smug smiles I’ve seen in a long while. This part also shows a downside to having big boobs.
But sadly that time taken was more than enough for Nico to escape and run away. Still confused about why she’s run off, the girls take a breather in a near by park and discuss their options going forward. An uninvited trip to her house is proposed, but being that they don’t know where she lives, it can’t really work. Luckily they don’t have to worry about that as Hanayo notices someone walking down the sidewalk. Wait… it’s not Nico is it? No, it’s Nico’s little sister!! *death by cuteness* This season has really had lots of lolis in anime, I’m surprised. Well here’s another one that might be up for Loli of the Season. Shiro is already leading that category, with Enju close behind, then pretty much everyone in Gochiusa, but maybe Kokoro Yazawa will come out victorious.
We learn from Kokoro that Nico has been actually lying to them the whole time, saying that she’s a super idol and the rest of the girls are her background dancers. I felt for Nico here as it was never fully explained in detail about her first experience trying to start a school idol group. In season 1 we learn that Nico was in a school idol group but they all quit on her, this is a nice follow up to that background story on Nico and ultimately adds unseen depth to her character as well, seeing what her motivation is for wanting to be in Love Live so much.
The ending bit of this ep had some feels in it actually, as Honoka comes up with a plan to makes things better. With the rooftop all decorated and a stage built, they get the cutest dress for Nico and prepare her for a performance for her little sisters and brother. I really liked this part as it shows how much all the girls care for one another, as they’re always looking out for each other and trying to help fix any problem that arise. I also liked how they didn’t go overboard with trying to help Nico and fix the problem created. In some anime I really hate how the MC will go overboard trying to help someone with a personal problem they have. I don’t know, in my eyes it just seems like a bit too much at a certain point; I can’t think of any examples at the moment, but yeah I liked how this was executed in Love Live, it wasn’t too over the top.
So finishing up this ep I really enjoyed it a lot. Although I still think ep 3 is the best so far, this comes in a close second place. I’m hoping that there will be a Maki ep at some point; a Twitter friend of mine bringing out this point I hadn’t thought of actually.
So maybe that will be the Maki ep, I’m not sure, but I really do want there to be a Maki ep at some point, I’d be overjoyed if there was.
Let’s take a look at some screen shots now!
And there you have it! Ep 4 of Love Live was a really good one and it looks like we’re going to have a Rin episode next week too. They have to have a Maki ep, I really, really want a Maki ep. Anyways I’ll have my review of Black Bullet ep 4 up later tonight, so stay up late for that one and then No Game, No Life on Wednesday. If you’ve missed my last post, I’ve dropped Date A Live II as I was sick of how it was going; as I stated in the comments though, I will return only if it gets much better and things start shaping up, but until then I’m not going to watch it. That also means I won’t review it either which in turn means I now have an open review spot. If you don’t follow me on Twitter (I highly suggest you do at this point) then you’ll have missed my tweets where I said I’m going to be reviewing Selector Infected WIXOSS now, starting at ep 5. If you aren’t watching WIXOSS yet you will be after my reviews, seriously it’s a really good anime and I can’t believe more people aren’t watching it.
Alright then that’s it for this review, I’ll cya next Monday for another Love Live review! Until then here’s what to expect.
