Sorry for taking so long with this review. I was waiting for one sub group to release, but they’ve been delayed for a long while, prompting me to go to another group.
We’ve got some more mech action in this ep, the squad comes face to face (literally) with the enemy, and Nagate has some trouble overcoming the horrifying events.
Here’s my review.
Picking up where the series opener left us, Nagate and co come face to face with a Gauna, the first time that’s happened in 100 years. Needless to say no one is ready to actually fight one, even though they’re trained pilots and have badass mechs. Striking quickly, the Gauna takes Eiko Yamano’s mech down with a single blow and damages Nagate’s mech too, knocking him unconscious and wounding him. With the rest of the pilots sitting stunned, Yamano is then taken out of the cockpit of her mech and eaten by the Gauna. Ugh, terrible way to go.
Back at the base, Kobayashi orders the pilots to retreat so they can safely fire the Heavy Mass Cannon. Holy shit that sounds badass, a Heavy Mass Cannon?! So anyways they issue the retreat order and fire the cannon, as it’s going to take 90 seconds to reach them. Back with the pilots, they’re getting hammered as they don’t have the special spear needed to kill the Gauna, so they’re all just running around trying not to get killed. Moments before his short piloting career nearly came to an end, Nagate snaps back awake and is on full badass mode. He lays into the Gauna with rockets and his arm cannon, further wowing the group with his extreme piloting skill. But as the Heavy Mass Cannon has already been fired, and as he doesn’t have that spear needed, Nagate is forced to leave mid battle so he can keep living to die another day.
Back on Sidonia (I’m guessing a few days later) there is a funeral for the fallen pilot which the whole student body attends. There Kobayashi says some words about Yamano and also reminds the trainees that they are at war with the Gauna and this is a very serious matter that’s at hand now. I’m wondering about that guy protesting outside about how there aren’t any Gauna or how the leaders are corrupt and lying to the people, he obviously wasn’t there when the Gauna ate Yamano so what’s he going on about anyways? Sure the leaders aren’t telling the truth, that’s a given for any leader, but there are Gauna out there, they killed that one girl and would’ve killed the rest of the pilots had they not fired the Heavy Mass Cannon.
Students are also starting to talk about how it’s Nagate’s fault that Yamano was killed, calling him a jinx. Seriously, they weren’t even out there and I bet if they were, they’d have sat there shitting their pants because they’d have no idea what to do. So now Nagate is public enemy number 1 of the school. Also, what’s their deal bothering him about how he eats all the time? What the fuck is wrong with that? Seriously are all the kids in that school douche bags or something?
Nagate is also conscripted into Belt Safety training, as he doesn’t wear a safety belt around Sidonia. Apparently 100 years ago during another great disaster, the gravity got turned off and lots of people died again. I’m sure that’s bad and all, but I wonder how that all happened? Nagate is also having some trouble from his up close experience with the Gauna and is showing signs of maybe PTSD as he’s randomly throwing up and fainting.
So the ep finishes with a team of elite pilots coming to the school to come talk with Nagate about something, I’m guessing he’s going to be asked to join the elite team because he’s got mad skillz and is probably better than all the other trainees at school, but that’s yet to be seen. All in all I liked this ep as it had some action and also some more plots points happening. It still very much in the setting up process, so you can’t expect to have everything answered in this ep, but it did a pretty good job of revealing more of the plot.
Let’s take a look at some screen shots from the ep now.
So that’s that. Finally getting this review out of the way. Sorry once again for being so late with this review, I’ll try to have the next one out sooner, but it all depends of when Underwater will have their version out. So I can’t find any good pic to use for the bonus pic, so I’ll leave you with pics of the preview. I’ll cya next time for another review, probably the ep 3 review for Knights of Sidonia.
